1.1.2 Describe the need for change management

Change management is all about guiding a transition from the way things are now to the way we want them to be. It’s like having a plan to help us smoothly switch from our current situation to a better one.

Moore’s law tells us that technology keeps advancing naturally. When we need new systems to solve problems or replace old ones, we have to manage that change. We have to make sure the switch from the old way to the new way goes well. There are different ways to do this:

  1. Direct Changeover: We get rid of the old system and put the new one in its place right away. This is quick and cheap, but it’s risky because we can’t go back to the old system.

  2. Parallel Running: We use both the old and new systems at the same time. If the new system has problems, we can still rely on the old one. But it can be expensive, and we might run out of memory.

  3. Phased Changeover: We introduce the new system in stages. For example, one part of the company starts using it first, and we fix any issues before rolling it out to other parts. This takes time and money, but it improves the system along the way.

  4. Pilot Running: We test the new system on a small part of the company first, and if it works well, we use it for the whole company. It’s effective but can be costly.

Change can be tough. Without a good plan for how to make the change, it won’t work well. There are many things to consider:

  • Training for employees.
  • How to introduce the new system.
  • Which type of change-over to use: Direct, Parallel, Phased, or Pilot.

So, why do we need to manage change? Because it helps us make sure that changes are done well and that they benefit us in the long run. It’s not just about the technology; it’s about how people and teams adapt to the new way of doing things. Whether it’s a small process change or a big shift in strategy, change management makes sure we get the most out of the change.
